The Department of Library and Information Science successfully organized a one-day seminar on the theme “Online Information for Education and Research” on October 10, 2024. The seminar was attended by 135 participants, including students, faculty members, and researchers. The event aimed to enhance knowledge about free online resources and tools available for academic and research purposes.
Session 1:
The first session was conducted by Dr. K. Ramasamy, College Librarian at M.V. Muthiah Government Arts College for Women, Dindigul. His presentation focused on "Free Web-Based Research Assistants and Free AI Tools to Accelerate Research."
Dr. Ramasamy introduced participants to various free research assistants and AI tools that can aid in the research process, from literature searches to organizing references and data analysis. He demonstrated the practical applications of these tools, encouraging researchers to explore options like Google Scholar, Zotero, Mendeley, and other AI-powered platforms to streamline their research workflows. His session was highly engaging and provided the audience with hands-on knowledge on optimizing their research capabilities using free resources.
Session 2:
The second session was delivered by Dr. N. Abdul Latheef, Librarian at Islamiah College (Autonomous), Vaniyambadi. His talk focused on "SWAYAM-NPTEL MOOC Courses."
Dr. Latheef discussed the significance of SWAYAM and NPTEL, two of India’s leading platforms offering free and premium Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) for students, educators, and professionals. He outlined the vast array of courses available on these platforms, which cover a variety of disciplines, and how these courses can be utilized for professional development and skill enhancement. He also explained the credit transfer system for SWAYAM-NPTEL courses and their value in academic qualifications and career growth.
