Local History, the study of local communities within a very narrow geographical area like a village, town or cities is an appropriate method to understand History. Muslims of Vaniyambadi had a glorious past; particularly their role in the 20th century socio political scenario is highly significant. A study of Vaniyambadi Muslims reveals several interesting aspects that can integrate the local community with the national and International scenario. |

Nawab Muhammad Ali’s Relationship with Yusuf Khan D. Abul Fazal In International Journal of Science and Humanities, , Dec 2015, Volume: Vol.1 No.2, Page: 1013 -1018.
Abstract [+]
Nawab Muhammad Ali and Yusuf Khan were two most prominent personalities of 18th century Tamil Nadu. The study of the relationship between these two personalities is a subject matter of interesting study for we have contradicting opinions regarding their relationship. The English Historians suggest an everlasting contradiction between these two men while the Native Historians narrate a friendly relation between these two people. An objective study of their relationship reveals that neither was it as harsh as the English Historians suggest nor was it as friendly as the native historians’ record. |

Salt Satyagraha Activities in Chennai City – A Study D. Abul Fazal In Tamil Nadu History Congress Proceedings 25th Silver Jubilee session, University of Madras, Oct 2018.
Abstract [+]
The Salt Satyagraha activities in Chennai city were one of the most impressive events of Chennai city between the wars. They were earlier to the salt saryagraha activities at Vedaranyam. They were organised by the political opponents of Rajagopalachari in the Congress as a protest against Rajagopalachari’s order that ‘no other party except the one that marches under him should violate the salt law in Tamil Nadu’ . Here the leaders were less cautious, and the movement was less disciplined, but it was full of events and incidents. The involvement of Choolai mill workers and the people gave mass orientation to the movement here. The high-handed action of the police turned the volunteers to be violent. As violence begets violence, the police turned to be more violent that finally resulted in police opening firing causing fatal causalities. Still the movement continued till the Gandhi- Irwin Pact. These aspects of salt satyagraha activities at Chennai city do not receive the due recognition they deserve, as the historical works on Tamil Nadu fail to make any reference of them. Hence this paper. |

Quit India Movement in Tamil Nadu: A Study D. Abul Fazal In Proceedings Volume of the 32nd Session of South Indian History Congress, University of Kerala, Feb 2013.
Abstract [+]
Quit India Movement in Tamil Nadu was People’s war. Immediately after the approval of the Quit India Resolution on 8 August 1942 the leaders were arrested and the people became leaderless. The Situation in the then Madras Presidency was much worse. Rajaji had resigned from the congress on the question of Pakistan and other leaders who would have had a restraining influence on the people had been incarcerated. In spite of the absence of elite leaders the movement was carried out vigorously. |

V.M. Obaidullah- A Less Remembered Patriot D. Abul Fazal In Proceedings Volume of 19th Session of Tamil Nadu History Congress, , Oct 2012.
Abstract [+]
V.M. Obaidullah of erstwhile North Arcot District was a great patriot. His enthusiastic involvement in the Indian national movement from his very young age, his earnest commitment to the cause of the nation, his non-partisan attitude, his insightful political acumen, his ability to organise people and his oratorical excellence were all his virtues that gave a great impetus to the Indian national movement in Tamil Nadu, in general, and in the erstwhile North Arcot District in particular. A factor that has not seen the light, hence this paper. |

Tipu Sultan: A Right Perspective D. Abul Fazal In Proceedings Volume 17th Session of Tamil Nadu History Congress, NGM College, Pollachi., Oct 2010.
Abstract [+]
Tipu Sultan is more sinned against in that that he is portrayed distortedly as cruel, intolerant, unjust, arrogant and over-bearing while the truth is that he was highly humane, over-heartedly kind, enormously considerate, overwhelmingly tolerant, unabashedly just, religiously humble. Both the Imperialist historians and the communal historians indulge in this distortion and character assassination of Tipu. For, the British imperialists having imposed and fought very cruel wars against Tipu, could justify them only if he is portrayed as cruel, intolerant and unjust. The communal historians could win an antiMuslim point if Tipu is projected so. The casualty in the approach of both is the truth. Hence this paper to project Tipu in right perspective. |

Khilafat Movement, Gandhi and the Congress D. Abul Fazal In Proceedings Volume of 15th Session of Tamil Nadu History Congress, Periyar Maniammai, University, Thanjavur, Sep 2008.
Abstract [+]
The Indian nationalist historiography is defective as far it does not give due importance to the Khilafat Movement. The Khilafat Movement was an epoch making event as it helped for and ensured the rise of Gandhi as an all-India leader, transformed the Indian National Congress in to a mass movement and, consequently, helped for the independence of India. Had there been no Khilafat Movement these factors would not have taken place or would have taken place much later. These impacts of the Khilafat Movement are not at all highlighted. Hence this paper. |

Khilafat Activities in Madras City D. Abul Fazal In Proceedings Volume of 14th Session of Tamil Nadu History Congress, University of Madras, Chennai, Dec 2007.
Abstract [+]
Khalifat, the Muslim Empire founded by Muhammed, the Prophet (PBUH), stood extended far and wide from the beginning of the 8th Century to the end of the 19th Century, when European Powers made onslaughts on it under the garb of Nationalism, Democracy and Self-Determination. With the dawn of 20th Century further onslaughts were made and at the end of the First World War the extinction of the Khalifat was almost a certainty. The Khilafat Movement was a response of the Indian Muslims to the British participation in the disintegration of the Muslim Empire and an attempt to sustain the Khalifat. The paper is a study of the response of the people of Madras City to the Movement and its impact. |

Muslims and the Rowlatt Act Satyagraha D. Abul Fazal In Proceedings of the 63rd Session of Indian History Congress, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Dec 2003.
Abstract [+]
The Rowlatt Act Satyagraha was an epoch making event in the history of Indian national movement and in the career of Gandhi. Here began the transformations : the transformation of the Indian National movement from an elite to one of mass based and the transformation of Gandhi from a `peripheral figure' in the politics of nationalism to that of a national figure. Muslims, who had been aggrieved over the Khilafat issue and its uncertain future, participated in the movement in large numbers, became the cause of the violence that erupted and the excitement that was caused thereof and of the tremendous impact that the movement had brought about and of its mass base. But for the Muslim participation the above transformations would not have been possible and the movement would not have gained the mass base. The historical works of India do not give importance to this factor. Hence this paper. |

The Leadership Crisis in the Congress: Muslims and the rise of Gandhi D. Abul Fazal In Proceedings Volume of the 62nd Session of Indian History Congress, Bhoj Open University, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, Dec 2002.
Abstract [+]
Gandhi, using and helping the Muslim cause, the Khilafat grievance, rose emerged as a National Leader with Muslim support. But for the Muslim support the rise of Gandhi and the consolidation of his leadership would have been delayed. A factor that has not attracted the attention of the Indian nationalist historians. Hence this paper. |

Quit India Movement in Tamil Nadu – A Subaltern Perspective D. Abul Fazal In Proceedings of ICHR Sponsored Three-day national seminar on’ Subaltern Freedom Fighters in Madras Presidency’. , Rajapalayam Raju's College, Rajapalayam - 626 117, Jan 2015.
Abstract [+]
The bankruptcy of the elitist Historiography is exposed when it is called upon to explain popular initiatives like the Quit India Movement in which the masses asserted themselves in the absence of elite control. Quit India Movement was people’s movements and it is really unfortunate that while Indian nationalist Historiography treats it as an elitist movement it refuses to acknowledge the subaltern participation. The objective of the paper is to highlight the subaltern perspective of Quit India Movement in Tamil Nadu. |

Altruism was Volksgeist – A Folk Belief in Tamilagam Dr. K. Murugan In 38th Annual session proceedings of South Indian History Congress, Department of History, University of Calicut, Kerala., Jan 2018.
Abstract [+]
Altruism or selflessness is the principle or practice of concern for the welfare of others. It was a National Sprit and a traditional virtue in Ancient Tamil Nadu. The hero stones of individuals illuminated the virtues and valour of the people. No history can be written without the consideration of the lengthy list of heroes, those personalities who were risked and sacrificed their lives to try to save or protect the lives of others. Every society in this world has its own brave history and the erection of memorials in honour of that brave man or woman, who died in a brave or heroic action, is common phenomenon in all civilizations. These memorials took different forms in different countries and in different ages. In Tamil Nadu, the erection of memorials gets its stable foot from the megalithic culture. Sangam bards speak about the rituals for erecting hero-stones as memorials. Hero-stones were considered as a primary source to study the different aspects of common people’s life and culture, their mode of warfare, dress, ornaments, hair style, weapons, animals and to a certain extent their habits, customs, beliefs and languages etc. Through this paper an attempt is made to carve out the immense importance of the availability of the numerous epigraphical sources to construct and reconstruct the glorious past of the country. To illuminate the past glorious of this region, an in-depth research study is the need of this hour. |

The Dynamics of Protests against Elitists in Tamil Nadu - A Bird's Eye View Dr. K. Murugan In 23rd Annual Session of Tamil Nadu History Congress, Department of History, Periyar University, Salem, Oct 2016.
Abstract [+]
Elitists tend to favour social system such as meritocracy, technocracy and plutocracy as opposed to radical democracy, political egalitarianism and popularism. Elitists believe only a few "shakers and movers" truly change society rather than society being changed by the majority of people. Whatever may be the form of Elitism and their nature is nothing more than that discrimination and they are not only self-centered but also exploitative in nature. The purpose of the paper is to draw the attention to the issues related to protest against the elitists in Tamil Nadu from time immemorial. |

INDIA’S FREEDOM STRUGGLE: THE RESPONSE OF MUSLIM STUDENTS IN TAMILNADU P. Basith Assarani In A Quarterly International Multilateral Thamizh Journal of Modern Thamizh Research, , Apr 2020, Volume: 8, No.2, Page: 457-482.
Abstract [+]
The Muslim student’s community in Tamil Nadu participated in almost all the movements like Khilafat Movement, Swadeshi Movement, Home Rule Movement, Nagpur Flag Agitation, Anti-Simon Demonstration, Civil Disobedience Movement, Salt Satyagraha, Anti-Two Nation Theory and Quit India Movement etc., in India’s freedom struggle till the achievement of Independence in 1947. Particularly Gandhian phase in our freedom struggle was fuelled and energised by the arrival of Khilafat Movement and the active participation of Muslims. Contribution of Muslims, especially the student’s community of Muslims were neglected in the historical writings and their names are slowly diminishing from the eyes of the historians. Their contribution is inalienable from the history of freedom struggle in Tamil Nadu. The purport of this paper is an attempt to initiate effort to dig out the real facts about the Muslim Students community in the history of India’s freedom struggle. |

Abstract [+]
V.M. Obaidullah a secular Nationalist among the Muslim freedom fighters of Tamil Nadu vigorously took part in almost all national movements in India. He followed Gandhi’s ideology of non-violence during his participation in the Indian National movement. His name was frequently expressed with other National freedom fighters of India like Dr, Pattabhi Sittaramayya, T.S.Pattabiraman, Kamarajar, Dr. Ansari, Moulana Abul Kalam Azath etc., V.M. Obaidullah, a formidable National leader of Vellore his forefathers hailed from Vaniyambadi and settled at Vellore. He influenced the public masses through his oratorical skills in the public meetings and made the freedom struggle of Vellore as a mass movement. V.M. Obaidullah and Kamarajar was a close friend for nearly two decades and Obaidullah also lived and died like a Kamarajar, sacrificed everything for the cause of Nationalism and Nation. He tilted the election results favourable to Kamarajar by using his influence among the masses in Vellore once. Jawaharlal Nehru conveyed his thanks to V.M. Obaidullah through a letter to the then Chief Minister of Madras province for his service. His services to the nation is memorable one but started disappearing from all historical records. His second generation heir is not aware about his tireless service even. His services to the nation placed in all international Medias like World Heritage Encyclopaedia, world eBook Libraries etc., as Indian Muslims and freedom fighters of India but diminishing in regional level. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the selfless services of V.M. Obaidullah to our Indian nation. |

Hero-Stone Speaks: Altruism was Volksgeist in Krishnagiri Region P.BASITH ASSARANI In International Journal of Science and Humanities, Islamiah College Publications, , Dec 2016, Volume: 2, No 2, Page: 465-470.
Abstract [+]
No history can be written without the consideration of the lengthy list of heroes, those personalities who were risked and sacrificed their lives to try to save or protect the lives of others. Every society in this world has its own brave history and the erection of memorials in the honour of that brave man or woman, who died in a brave or heroic action, is common phenomenon in all civilizations. Plenty of Hero Stones available in Krishnagiri region speaks about the selfless courage of the people in and around Krishnagiri district. The sati stones and the hero stones of individuals also illuminated the virtues and valour of the Krishnagiri people. To illuminate the past glorious of this region, an in-depth research study is the need of this hour. Altruism or selflessness is the principle or practice of concern for the welfare of others. It is a traditional virtue in krishnagiri region. |

Tamilian Historiography – A Subaltern Approach P. Basith Assarani In International Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences, Research India Publications, Delhi-110089, , Jul 2016, Volume: 6, No 2, Page: 117-123.
Abstract [+]
Elitist bias in historiography in Europe came under severe criticism from some French Scholars. Marc Bloch and Lucien Febure were the leading light among them. They came to be called as historians of the Annales School. In the 1920s they urged the need to study history from below. From then onwards Subaltern studies attracted the attention of serious scholars all over the world. In the 1980s Ranajit Guha and his disciples founded the school of Subaltern studies in India. Guha and his followers focused attention on bringing to light the Voice of the Voiceless Masses in Indian history. In a dozen scholarly volumes brought out by this school eminent scholars have effectively focused their discussions on Subaltern issues. In the post-independence period, Marxist historiography made a deep impact on Indian historians. Subaltern studies have also become popular to a certain extent. For writing the history of the marginalized sections, traditional sources are not sufficient. One has to tap into the untapped sources available in the form of folk literature and folk arts. An interdisciplinary approach is the need of the hour. Reference1 |

Peasant Conditions under Qutb Shahis of Golconda P.BASITH ASSARANI In Department of History & Tourism Management, Kakatiya University, Warrangal, Telangana, , May 2016, Volume: 11, No 1, Page: 106-110.
Abstract [+]
Qutb Shahi rulers were progressive rulers in the history of Deccan and proved themselves as benevolent among the contemporary rulers in that period. They followed very lenient policy with the peasants in the collection of land revenue during the time of seasonal failures and also at the time of natural disasters. They established new villages all over the country with the aim to convert the uncultivated lands to cultivated lands and concentrated more for the development of agriculture and motivated the peasants for the cultivation, by introducing peasant welfare programmes at the village level in their kingdom. In that way the Golconda sultans balancing the per capita income with the national income through constant and continued reform measures and proved them as noble among others and far away from the exploitative nature. |

The role of Krishnagiri District in India's Freedom Struggle - A Study Dr. K.Murugan In Tamil Nadu History Congress, Proceedings of the 25th Silver Jubilee Session, University of Madras, Chennai, Oct 2018.
Abstract [+]
Krishnagiri district recorded his first protest against the British atrocities in the form of revolt during the later period of 18th century, simultaneously with the Polygars revolutionof the southern part of Tamil Nadu. The masses of the farmers of Paramathi and Perundurai villages in the Krishnagiri district were revolt against the British Government for collection of excessive tax and their oppressive policy in the year 1799A.D. Prominent among them were Bodda Muhammad, Muhammad Qasim and Amanullah Khan of Hosur. The revolt was suppressed and resulted with the hanging punishment for Muhammad Qasim by the British, but before the punishment was executed, Muhammad Qasim slit his throat himself and committed suicide, feeling of dishonour if hanged by British. It is observed from the above matters, the masses of the Krishnagiri district started their resentment against the British atrocities from the 18th century in an unorganised manner and show their abhorrence through the revolt of farmers and try to remove their native land from the foreign yoke. The selfless sacrificed dedication of freedom fighters in Krishnagiri district along with the freedom fighters throughout India resulted in the deliverance of India from the British rule on 15th August 1947. |
