About the Department
The Department of Economics one of the founding department of the college. In 1946 college was upgraded to a first grade degree college offering instruction in the two years degree course in B.A. (Economics). According to the new educational setup in 1956, the University of Madras granted permission for opening Pre-University Course and three years B.A. Economics degree course. During the year 1977-78 department of Economics was converted into Department of Public Relations due to its more employability. Again in 1980 – 81 due to the poor response of the student’s admission in the Department of Public Relations, it was reconverted into Department of Economics. In the year 2010-11 due to the need of changing scenario of the society and employability the Department of Economics has been converted into Department of Commerce (Finance & Accounts) as specialization. The department offers Ph.D. Part time program in Economics so far, 4 awarded, one scholar submitted synopsis and one waiting for viva – voce examination.

The area under cotton in the world 4.6 million ha and production is 12.75 million L. in the year 2013-14 ., (ICAR 2014) in India area under cotton is 11.98 million ha and production is 34.00 million bales 2013-14. Cotton ranks third in the world, but its yields are the lowest with 432 kg lint per acre.

Prof. Muhammed Younus, a great economist of Bangladesh took initiative in setting up Self Help Groups and this SHGs were gradually spread all over the world. This social movement unites the people hailing from poor background. Those who are joining this group feel socially and economically responsible to one another. In India, there are some likeminded bodies and stakeholders of some government organizations play pivotal role towards the formation of SHG In this research article, role of SHGs in Vellore district is studies under the three dimensions of Cognitive role, leadership role and role towards entrepreneurship.

The buzzword today in the Marketing Industry is “Rural Marketing”; reportedly three times that of the European Market, the Indian rural market is a huge untapped resources Almost half of the national income is generated here. Rural market offers new and greatest opportunities to manufacturer. MNC’s and Indian companies alike are now plugging into these huge markets. India is a country where the majority population, almost 70% lives in villages, there are 627000 villages in the country spread across its length and breadth. There are 25 official languages and some four hundred dialects spoken in the country; most world religion have their adherence here. Gone are the days when village were using neem or babul tree to twig for cleaning their teeth, today they are using ultra bright shine of Colgate or some other international brand of tooth paste instead of groundnut the children are asking for chocolate candies that will meet in their mouths, face cream or lotions have replaced besan (chickpea flour) as a face cleanser. Rural Marketing Is the process of developing, pricing, promotion distributing rural specific goods and services to exchange between urban and rural markets which satisfy consumer demand and also achieve organasational objectives.Marketing Mix:1. ProductThe various product levels as outlined by Philips Kotler, namely core Benefit, Expected Product, augmented products and potential product should be adequately taken into consideration in rural product also. Most of the times in the urban product the product is offered at the augmented product , But in the rural markets in India is operated in the Expected Product section where his expectation are met, due to the low level of income and literacy level.

Women Entrepreneurs may be defined as the women or a group of women who initiate, organize and operate a business enterprise. Government of India has defined women entrepreneurs as an enterprise owned and controlled by a women having a minimum financial interest of 51% of the capital and giving at least 51% of employment generated in the enterprise to women.. Women in business are the surprising phenomena India.. Women entrepreneurs are emerged in business due to push and pull factors such as Saddled with household chores, death of bread winner and domestic responsibilities of women, want to get independence Such situation is described as pull factors. While in push factors women engaged in business desire to show their talent, to gain recognition, importance, social status etc.

In the fastest growing IT industry the employees’ attitude and commitment requires regular monitoring and fine-tuning in order to build positive work environment that will result in the development of both organization and its employees. The primary objective of the research study is to determine the relationship between employees’ attitude and organizational commitment of Chennai based IT employees. The researcher has selected ten (10) major firms in the IT sector located in Chennai (Tamilnadu) and 30 employees from each organization by adopting Quota cum convenient sampling method. The research study found that correlation between employees’ attitude and organizational commitment is concerned there exists a correlation (0.707) at 0.01 significance level (2 tailed tests) and as the significance level is less than 0.01, Ho is rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that there exists a significance relationship between employees’ attitude and organizational commitment.

In era of globalization, most of the organization faces the problem of efficiency, productivity or performance due to employees' commitment and to investigate the level of organizational commitment among BPO employees in Bengaluru. A total of 30 questionnaires were administered and quota sampling was adopted. For the purpose of analysis, the researcher used the frequency distribution, cumulative percentage, and Independent sample T-test, ANOVA and Factor analysis. Found that, there is a positive relationship between Affective, Continuous, and Normative Commitment. One way ANOVA analysis revealed that clusters are significant and heterogeneous. Further, the researcher found that there is no significant difference in Affective, Continuous, and Normative Commitment of male and female employees of IT industry.

Abstract [+]
Introduction:In era of globalization, most of the organization face the problem of efficiency, productivity or performance due to employees' commitment.
Objective: To investigate the level of organizational commitment among Chennai based IT employees.
Methodology: As per the convenience of the researcher the convenient sampling was adopted. A total of 35 questionnaire were administered Chennai based IT employees and they were requested to complete the questionnaire in their weekend holidays. Out of 35 respondents, 30 respondents have promptly responded and which is taken for analysis. For the purpose of analysis, the researcher used the frequency distribution , cumulative percentage, Independent sample T-test, ANOVA and Factor analysis.
Result:Found that, there is a positive relationship between Affective, Continuous, Normative Commitment. One way ANOVA analysis revealed that clusters are significant and heterogeneous. Further, the researcher found that there is no significant difference in Affective, Continuous, Normative Commitment of male and female employees of IT industry.

The importance of employees’ attitude and organizational commitment has become the main concern for much organization, especially in IT sector. Presently most of the organizations have started to consider, it is an essential part of their business success. Unfortunately, there is limited research on how the practice of employees’ attitude would lead to organizational commitment. Further, there is limited research in IT sectors. This study intends to find the relationship between employees’ attitude and organizational commitment. 30 questionnaires were distributed to employees in IT companies located in Chennai. Based on the data, result revealed that there is a significant association between employees’ attitude and organizational commitment.

On 12.03.2019 Department of Commerce (F&A) Organised a Special Lecture Programme on “Indian Economy-Emerging Challenges and Issues” in the Seminar hall at 11:00 a.m. The chief guest is a renowned Economist Prof.Vankatesh B.Athreya Adjunct Professor, Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, Chennai delivered a lecture on the above topic.
2. On 04.02.2020 The Department of Commerce (F&A)’s Association meeting held in the Seminar hall at 11.00 a.m. The chief guest is a renowned professor and expert in the field of Islamic Banking and Finance, Dr.Nissar Ahmad Yatoo, Visiting faculty, Islamiah College of Science and Commerce, Jammu & Kashmir, delivered a lecture on “Islamic Banking & Finance- Principles, Policies & Practices”.
3. On 13.02.2020 a Special guest lecture Programme held on the current issue “Indian Budget 2020 - An Analysis and Discussion”, presented by Dr.S.M Surya Kumar, Professor, Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM), Tiruchirappalli at 11.00 a.m in the Seminar Hall.
Best Practices
1. Our mentors take care of students’ performance, their conduct and results by regularly counseling them and by conducting informal and formal meeting with their parents to discuss student’s difficulties and problems.
2. Professors and students of our department are actively participating in Seminars, Conferences and Workshops very often every year.
3. Information and Computer Technology based learning is encouraged in our department by utilizing laptops for practical learning in the class room especially for practicing MS Office and Tally - ERP package.
4. Discipline is maintained in class rooms and maintaining general etiquettes on dressing, grooming hair, behaving with elders, overall personality development among the students. Further verify students’ class work notes, homework and assignment notes by every weekend, especially for third year candidate we are providing interview tips how to face the interview in IT Companies, MNCs and other motivational trainings etc.
5. The students who are regular absentees as well as afternoon class skippers from the B.Com. (Finance & Accounts) I, II, and III years’ parents are called, and offer counseling to concentrate on their wards, on regularity to the college as well as their performance in studies.
Future Plan
1. Focusing on students join in higher education or atleast possess an additional skill either in Tally (ERP), Auditing Courses etc.,
2. Concentrate on providing employment oriented courses.
3. To conduct inter college competition to expose their talents every year.
4. To take efforts to publish research articles by the faculty and the students in the journals approved by the UGC.
5. To organize International, National Seminars, Conferences and Workshops in every year
